LWMS Grand Canyon East/West Retreat

October 4-6, 2024

Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.

Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God,

till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.

Psalm 71:17-18

LWMS Fall Retreat Presenters

Beth currently serves as the Nurse Advisor for the Central Africa Medical Mission where she provides support to our medical staff in Malawi and Zambia. Prior to that Beth served as the Nurse in Charge for the Lutheran Mobile Clinic in Malawi where she ran the medical operations of the clinic. She

greatly improved clinical care and relations with staff, she also began a program for children who did not have access to physiotherapy. Beth is Registered Nurse, prior to joining CAMM she served as the first school nurse at St Marcus Lutheran School in Milwaukee, and as an urgent care nurse with Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. She and her husband Gary are both members of St. Marcus in Milwaukee, where she sings with the Gospel Choir and is a part of the member care team

Erik and Staci have had a “mission-focused marriage” since their wedding in June, 1997.  The couple moved to St. Lucia in the Caribbean in July, 1997 and stayed there until July, 2016.  During this 19 year stretch Erik was the Minister of Christian Education at Trinity Lutheran Church.  He worked with children, youth, and adults in the areas of Christian education, music, worship, and evangelism.  He also volunteered in a number of schools and other community organizations.  Staci filled these years by fulfilling a number of different roles: volunteer minister, stay at home mom, librarian, and awesome and supportive wife.  Staci and Erik were blessed with three boys while they lived in St. Lucia: Jonas(24); Jaxson(22) and Ethan (17). In 2016 Erik took a call to be a high school theology teacher at Divine Savior Academy in Miami, FL.  He mostly taught junior and senior at the high school level and was able to volunteer in various capacities at Divine Savior Church.  Staci worked at Divine Savior in multiple different capacities and also worked for Miami Dade Public Schools.  In July, 2023 Staci and Erik moved to Peridot, AZ on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.  Erik currently serves the school and two churches as youth and family minister.  Staci is the reading specialist at Peridot-Our Savior’s Lutheran School.  Although the cultures (and income!) of St. Lucia, Miami and Peridot are quite different from one another, God’s Word and its message are still effective!

LWMS Mission Project Offering

WM-2024-07 -CAMM

( Central Africa Medical Mission)

The Central Africa Medical Mission (CAMM) oversees a permanent clinic called the Lutheran Mission Rural Health Centre in Zambia on the same property as one of the Lutheran churches of Central Africa.  CAMM also operates the Lutheran Mobile Clinic in Malawi, which travels to four different villages throughout the week.  The buildings used in these villages serve as clinics during the week and as churches on Sundays.  Both clinics are completely run by national health care workers.  Prior to clinic work starting for the day, a brief devotion is given to all who attend.  Both clinics focus on providing Christian Counseling and testing for HIV, education and treatment of malaria, immunizations, wellness education, and treatment of other minor injuries or illness.  By partnering with the Lutheran Church of Central Africa and WELS missionaries, CAMM provides help for the spiritual and physical needs of the people in Zambia and Malawi.  Our gifts will allow CAMM to continue touching the lives of close to 80,000 individuals on an annual basis.

Peridot Library Rehabilitation Project

The literacy rate on the San Carlos Indian Reservation is low and students often enter school with very little exposure to books and reading. Peridot-Our Savior’s Lutheran is constantly looking for ways to mitigate this issue. The kindergarten through second-grade teachers and the reading specialist have all been trained in a renowned reading instruction program. With the recent construction of a new school building, there is now a dedicated space for a school library. POSL has a good start on the quantity of books, but what is lacking are books geared toward the beginning reader. Teaching students to read does not necessarily make them life-long readers, which is our goal. We are looking to purchase high-quality, engaging books targeted at students starting to transition to longer chapter books. We are also hoping to invest in fun, comfortable library furniture. We want the library to be a place where the students look forward to coming to and spending time there!
